The COVID-19 pandemic was one of the greatest catastrophes of modern history. More than seven million people officially lost their lives worldwide, while the global economy suffered losses roughly calculated to be 15 trillion dollars. Yet despite the scale of this disaster, many of the most important questions remain unresolved. Instead of receiving complete transparency, the public was treated to censorship, political spin, and competing narratives.
Whether the virus emerged naturally, leaked accidentally from a laboratory, or resulted from some other chain of events remains one of the defining unanswered questions of our generation. What troubles me most is not that there are competing theories—it is that so many legitimate questions were dismissed before they could even be investigated.
Consider Fort Detrick in Maryland. In 2019, the CDC suspended certain research activities at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute because inspectors identified significant biosafety deficiencies, including problems with wastewater decontamination systems. The government stated there was no evidence of any release of dangerous pathogens, but the timing has inevitably drawn scrutiny. There were reports of respiratory related deaths in that region of Maryland (which were later attributed to Vaping) but had unusually similar characteristics to COVID related deaths. This was a few months before COVID broke out officially. Critics have asked whether every possibility was adequately investigated and whether the public received the complete story.
Then there is the outbreak of severe respiratory illnesses in the United States during 2019. Some observers have questioned whether some early illnesses, including cases initially associated with vaping or unexplained respiratory disease, could have represented undetected COVID-19. To date, no conclusive evidence has established such a connection, but the chronology continues to fuel debate.
The 2019 Military World Games in Wuhan have also attracted attention. Thousands of athletes from around the world, including a U.S. delegation, participated shortly before the first recognized outbreak. Some have hypothesized that the event may have contributed to early international transmission. Even Dr. Fauci, noted in his diary that the Markets in Wuhan were amplifiers, but not the source. However, there is currently no publicly verified evidence demonstrating that any participant intentionally or unintentionally introduced SARS-CoV-2 into Wuhan. There have however, been suggestions on social media that the US sent a virus mule to Wuhan (knowing that similar work was being done in Wuhan) to spread the virus that had already begun spreading in the U.S.
The role of EcoHealth Alliance deserves careful examination as well. It is now well documented that the organization received U.S. government funding to collaborate with the Wuhan Institute of Virology on coronavirus research. Congressional investigations concluded that EcoHealth violated certain NIH grant requirements and criticized the federal government’s oversight of potentially dangerous research. Following those investigations, the Department of Health and Human Services suspended funding to EcoHealth and initiated debarment proceedings. The House Select Subcommittee also recommended criminal investigation of EcoHealth’s leadership and highlighted deficiencies in NIH oversight.
The congressional investigations also raised broader questions about how gain-of-function and related pathogen research was funded and supervised. The Select Subcommittee concluded that federal oversight mechanisms were inadequate and called for substantial reforms. It also criticized aspects of the public messaging surrounding the lab-leak hypothesis, arguing that some officials worked to prematurely dismiss a possibility that deserved scientific consideration.
Anthony Fauci has naturally become one of the central figures in this debate because, as Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, he oversaw one of the principal agencies funding infectious disease research. His supporters argue he acted appropriately under unprecedented circumstances. His critics argue he supported research that carried unacceptable risks and later minimized legitimate questions about those programs. Those competing interpretations remain intensely debated.
Donald Trump occupies an equally complicated place in this story. His administration quickly shifted public attention toward China and the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Whether that reflected the best interpretation of the available intelligence or was driven partly by political considerations is still debated. What is undeniable is that the pandemic rapidly became a geopolitical confrontation rather than simply a scientific investigation.
It is well known that Fort Dietrich was a center for bio-weapon research. And the concept of a virus mule being sent to Wuhan to throw the whole world off track from the American sourcing of the virus.
What is fascinating though is that when it comes to Iran, early virus cases were not identified at the airport or big cities with Airports, but areas close to the ruling regime. Qom was the epicenter of the virus (originally). There have been conspiracy theories involving MEK operatives being used as viral mules – sent to Qom – to spread the virus among the regime leadership (and religious communities).
More interestingly, Iran, ended up developing the vaccine by itself, refusing to take any from the West! There were even reports that the US refused to supply the vaccine originally.
Of course, we will never know. It was fascinating to watch Dr. Fauci’s grilling yesterday in congress. The drama was real political theater. Dr. Fauci was grilled, but we all know, nothing of any significance will take place. It reminded me of the Iran-Contra hearings (run by none other than John Tower – who was deeply involved in the secret dealings with Iran’s mullahs). No one who gave witness and was grilled, received any more than $20,000 fine for their serious breaches of US Law. I mean they undermined US foreign policy, sold arms at inflated prices to Iran and used the profits to buy and ship in cocaine into the US (to distribute into black ghettos in swing states) to completely change the electoral map and outcomes in America! It just doesn’t get much worse. Republicans (joined with Joe Biden) changed federal guidelines on drug possession offences (to 20 years mandatory sentences), and eventually 10 million African Americans were sent to jail. Yet no one was punished.
Similarly, nothing of consequence has happened to anyone involved in the COVID laboratory breakout. How COVID was developed as a bio-weapon and even used as a bio-weapon (by the then Trump administration), against China and Iran.
Perhaps one day we will know exactly how COVID-19 began. Perhaps we won’t. But after millions of deaths and trillions of dollars in economic damage, the public deserves complete transparency—not selective transparency. Every laboratory record, every funding decision, every intelligence assessment, every biosafety inspection, and every internal communication relevant to the origins of the pandemic should ultimately be made public.
